Exhibition “Light Atmosphere in the City Centre at Night”

Workshop and exhibition focused on lighting installations at Hammaburg-Platz / Domplatz

With our project “Lieblingslicht” -Favourite Light-, we aimed to sharpen the perception of light and its effects. The project explores how light can make Hamburg’s city centre more vibrant and inviting in the evening and encourages a more conscious awareness of light. Although light is omnipresent, it often goes unnoticed. The exhibition sensitises visitors to the perception of light and its spatial impact.

In the workshop, we used the illuminated acrylic seating at Hammaburg-Platz as light sources for experimentation and design without changing the lighting technology. The process began with nighttime light observations, which formed the basis for developing designs for light sculptures under the theme “Layers of History – Beneath the Surface”. This theme relates to the historical significance of the site as a founding place of the city and its closeness to water.

At the beginning of the darker season, Hammaburg Square is reinterpreted through light. A distinctive atmosphere is created in the evening city centre, transforming the square into a place of attraction. Topics such as safety in public space, light pollution (Dark Sky), and the perception of public spaces through light are central to the project.
