Through our “Lieblingslicht” project, we sharpen our awareness of light and its effects. It shows how light makes Hamburg’s downtown area more beautiful and vibrant in the evening. We learn to perceive light more consciously. Although it is omnipresent, it often goes unnoticed. Our exhibition raises awareness of how we perceive light.
In the workshop, we used the brightly lit acrylic seats at Hammaburg-Platz as light sources to experiment and create. We began by exploring the light in the dark and recording our observations. Building on this, we designed light sculptures on the theme “Layers of History—Beneath the Surface.” The theme draws on the square’s historical significance as the city’s founding site and its proximity to the water.
We mechanically dimmed the light by using filters, fabrics, and colored materials—some of which absorb light. Birds and insects are particularly insensitive to shades of yellow and orange; these colors appear dark to them and do not disturb them. The exhibition attracted curious passersby, who asked many questions. Thanks to our lighting, the square seemed much more lively than usual.
